TULLYLISH BLITZ

Tullylish U-10 Blitz (Saturday 30th June 2007)

An Riocht Blitz

An Riocht U-10 Blitz Saturday June 9th

The St Michaels U-10 team took part their first ever football blitz competition at An Riocht playing fields on Saturday past.

It was a new experience for the St. Michaels youngsters, playing five competitive matches in the space of three hours against the so called bigger clubs of Down football. However despite their lack of experience at playing at this level, the team came away from Dunnaval Road in the knowledge that they done their club proud with great displays of skill, camardery and a never say die attitude.

The day started of with a tough opener against Down kingpins Mayobridge, followed by another tough match against the hosts An Riocht. St Michaels lost both games, however their performance against An Riocht, was a much improved display on their opener.

This improvement was carried into their third match, this time against Newry Shamrocks, when two late points from the Newry side robbed St Michaels off their first win in the competition losing by the narrowest of margins. Conor Mc Cabe and Conor Mc Donald scored two cracking goals in this tie.

Their fourth match was against East Down side Castlewellan, with the Magheralin team putting on an excellent controlled performance, winning comfortably in the end.

This set up a must win game against St Johns, who are very strong at this age level. The game should of been over by halftime, as St Michaels missed an open goal, hit the up right and also missed a penalty and the rebound. In the second half St Johns made them pay for their wastefulness in front of goal with a great second half performance to send St Michaels out of the competition.

Every St Michael's player put in fine performances on Saturday, however special praise must go to Tierna Grimes at full back with some great tackling and passing out of defence and Conor Mc Cabe and Conor Mc Donald in the forward line who linked up well to score some cracking points and goals.

The club would like to extend a big thank you to all parents who helped out on Saturday and to the An Riocht club for the welcome we received and the effort that was put in to organise the blitz.

Although the team only recorded one victory out of five games, the St Michaels coaching staff took great satisfaction out of the progress that the kids are making. This is the first year allot of our youngsters have played competitive football, and its the clubs aim that with another few years of coaching and competitive matches under our belts, our underage teams will be competing at the same level with the likes of the Mayobridge's and the Kilcoo's.

Anyway let just enjoy our wee victory over Castlewellan, as its been along time since a St Michaels team at any level has had a victory over the this mighty East Down club.  (Report by Eddie Mulgrew)

St. Michael's Vs Tullylish

St. Michael's 1-5  Tullylish 2-9

In this home encounter, St. Michael's u-12's looked to be on track for their first points of the season.  Both teams were level at half time on a scoreline of 1-2  each.

St. Michael's went into a one point lead mid way through the second half, however a late flurry of scores from the more experienced Tullylish side gave them a 2-9 to 1-5 win.

U-12 Round Up

Following St. Michaels' friendly away to Dromara,  the U-12's have since played two games in the South Down league.

They first had a home game against Drumgath in which they lost 3-4 to 1-4 despite a spirted second half performance.  Next up was a disappointing game away to Aghaderg, in which St. Michael's were well beat despite scoring a couple of late goals.

Next game is at home to Tullylish on Sunday 29th April at 11.00 am.

Under 12's

For the first time in over 10 years, St. Michael's have been able to field an underage team.  The U-12's took part in a friendly away to Dromara on Thursday 12th April in a game that all St. Michael's players can be proud of.

Next up for the U-12's is a home league game against Drumgath.
